How to Watch La Liga Online - The Best VPNs for La Liga in 2024

La Liga is back, and even without Lionel Messi, Spain's premier football competition will attract millions of viewings across not just the Iberian Peninsula, but the whole world. La Liga is particularly popular in the Americas, and there will no doubt be a multitude of fans tuning in.

The only downside is that La Liga isn't available to watch everywhere in the world, and on top of that, it isn't free in many regions that are showing it. With a VPN, however, you'll be able to unblock channels from around the world showing the game.

What are the best VPNs to stream La Liga?

How to Watch La Liga Online with a VPN

Unblocking the La Liga is really easy when using a VPN. All you have to do is follow the steps below:

  1. Sign up to a VPN – we’ve listed the five best VPNs for streaming La Liga below, so make sure you pick the one that works for you.
  2. Download and install the VPN software from your chosen provider's website.
  3. Connect to a VPN server in the country where the streaming site of your choice is available. For example, if it’s a Spanish streaming website, connect to a server in Spain.
  4. Start streaming La Liga – you’re all set to start streaming Spain’s premier football competition.

Can I watch La Liga online for free?

La Liga streams some games live on their Facebook page, which can be particularly useful in countries like India where TV coverage of the league is not available.

Game highlights are also uploaded to the La Liga YouTube channel shortly after the full-time whistle. The channel, which has almost 6 million subscribers, also publishes compilations, analysis and footage of press conferences.

We should also mention that there are some free VPNs out there, however, these services aren't meant for streaming. Free services have slow servers and implement data caps, so if you choose to use one you may be left frustrated. Check out our free VPNs page for a list of these services and some further information about free services.

Where to watch La Liga

No matter where you are, you can use a VPN to spoof your location and unblock La Liga streams no matter where you are. We have listed the cheapest and best ways to watch La Liga below.

Watch La Liga In the UK

To catch all the action from Spain’s top tier in the United Kingdom, you’ll need to be a Premier Sports customer. A subscription to the service is available to existing Sky TV customers for £7.99 a month, which gives you access to the La Liga TV channel.

Alternatively, there’s the option to subscribe to La Liga TV plus Premier Sports 1 and Premier Sports 2 for just £14.99 a month through Sky and £12.99 a month through Virgin Media. This is a better option if those who want coverage on the go, as it allows you to access the Premier Sports streaming app. You can also watch La Liga games on netgem.tv, which also provides access to Premier Sports 1 and 2.

La Liga games are often streamed back-to-back thanks to their kick-off times, so you may find you get more out of a subscription than you first expect.

Watch La Liga in the United States

ESPN has the exclusive rights to show La Liga in the United States until at least the 2028/29 season on ESPN+ after they took it off beIN Sports and outbid channels such as FOX Sports and GolTV to secure the coverage.

If you’re someone who prefers to watch games online rather than the TV, La Liga coverage through ESPN can be accessed through sites like fuboTV and Fanatiz, which both offer free 7-day trials and competitive prices. Check out our FuboTV VPN article for more information about unblocking this service.

Watch La Liga in Australia

La Liga games are also streamed through beIN Sports in Australia, but there are a number of different ways to subscribe to the sports channel.

Kayo Sports, a streaming platform that provides coverage of over 50 global sports, has subscriptions available for $25 and $35 per month.

The cheaper package lets users steam watch programming on two screens simultaneously, whilst the premium version supports three. The Split view function means you can watch up to four La Liga games at once, which means you won’t miss anything even if the big games clash.

You can also find coverage through Foxtel and Fetch TV, which both offer package deals that include access to other sports coverage.

Watch La Liga In Brazil

Brazilian La Liga fans will have been delighted with the announcement last month that the league has struck a five-year deal with The Walt Disney Company that now means ESPN and FOX Sports will be showing Spain’s top flight in Brazil.

You can also follow La Liga through satellite television operator DirecTV, which will continue to show games through its subscription TV service and streaming platform.

La Liga coverage is available elsewhere in South and Central America, including:

  • Chile (DirecTV Sports channel 610-619)
  • Ecuador (DirecTV Sports channel 610-619)
  • Mexico (Sky Sports channels 504-546)
  • Bolivia (Tigo Sports)

Why do I need a VPN to watch La Liga?

Despite being the second most-watched league in the world, it can sometimes be difficult to stream La Liga depending on your location. A good VPN will allow you to work around any geo-blocks that might apply to your region, country or area – so you can stream La Liga seamlessly.

It’s a common misconception that all VPNs can give you access to any site, in any country – in reality, not all can provide access to the content you would like to view.

For example, a VPN provider may not have a server in the right country – and even if they did, connection speeds vary, so picking the wrong option could leave you with a poor quality viewing experience.

When you’re choosing your network, make sure the VPN with servers in Spain, the UK or any other country with definite coverage of La Liga matches (we've listed some further down).

Reliability and Speed should be next on the list of priorities – the only thing worse than a laggy, stop-start connection is no connection at all.

But streaming La Liga is just the beginning. You can use your VPN for so much more:

La Liga season build-up

Spain's top teams have all played the first game of their season, and with Barcelona and Real Madrid's dire financial situations making all the headlines during the summer and the departure of Lionel Messi, teams around the two giants may see this as their season to make some headway at the top of the table and close the gap on the big teams.

Who are the title contenders?

Barcelona's poor management of their own finances over the past decade or has seen them rack up so much debt that La Liga refused to let them register some of their players and they could not afford to offer star man Lionel Messi a new contract. The cost of trying to keep up with the likes of PSG and Manchester City on the European stage seems to have taken its toll. However, it would be wrong to write of Barcelona completely. The Catalan giant still has quality running through the squad in the shape of experienced heads like Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets, whilst promising young talents like Frenkie De Jong and Ansu Fati help paint a bright picture for the club's future. Memphis Depay is now on board after an impressive domestic season and European Championships, but this is a squad that is still quite far off what Barca fans have come to expect. The departure of the world's best player – one the team has been built around now for around two decades – will surely have a negative effect, but Ronald Koeman will be hoping players will take responsibility and push on.

Real Madrid are in major debt too, but their situation is nowhere near as severe as their title rivals Barcelona. Real Madrid – despite losing Raphael Varane to Manchester United – still have a lot of quality running through their squad. The remaining talent is high enough quality for young, talented players like Martin Odegaard – who is currently negotiating a permanent move to Arsenal – to assume they have little future in the Madrid setup. David Alaba has joined on a free transfer from Bayern Munich and will add real quality, but aside from that, Real have had a pretty quiet transfer window. Karim Benzema scored two goals in the opening fixture off the back of a successful return to the France squad for Euro 2020, and Vinicius Jr, who also bagged a goal, looks like he could be turning into one of the best young players in the world.

Of course, a conversation about who may be crowned champions in 2024 won't be complete without the mention of Atletico Madrid, who secured the title last year under the guise of talismanic manager Diego Simeone. The capture of Luis Suarez from Barcelona proved a masterstroke, and the club is not in anywhere near as much trouble as its city and title rivals Madrid and Barcelona. They've splashed out over £30m on Udinese star Rodrigo de Paul, but apart from that, seem content with the squad that took them to victory last time out. Their fiery encounter with Celta Vigo in the opening game of the season led to one red card apiece and at least eight yellows between them, but Simeone will likely view this as a statement of intent: Atletico Madrid emerged victorious, grinding out the win the way true champions do.

A surprise package may emerge in the shape of Villareal, fresh off the back of a Europa League win and started the beginning of last season extremely well. They will have Champions League football to play this year as a result of their Europa League victory, which tends to have a negative impact on domestic league performance, but it wouldn't be all that surprising if they really pushed the top teams this year and at the very least gave them something to worry about.

Who are the relegation candidates?

Elche are one La Liga outfit that will be heading into this season looking for a strong start. They needed two back-to-back victories in their final two games to lift themselves out of the relegation zone, and never really looked comfortable competing with the league's bigger teams, which led to several painful defeats. They lost 16 games away from home in total, and it could be their form on the road that ultimately sends them down to Spain's second tier. Manager Fran Escriba has already publicly bemoaned his lack of signings, suggesting a squad overhaul was needed and around 10 new signings were required to stay up.

One familiar face it's nice to see back in La Liga is Espanol, who spent the last season getting promoted to Spain's top league, a change fans of the club will hope remains permanent. Espanol are a La Liga team through and through and it was quite a shock to see them relegated. Although they have a playing squad capable of a mid-table finish in Spain's elite competition, any team coming back up after 12 months facing lower-quality sides will likely take some time to adapt to a higher level of play. A journey back down to Spain's second-tier is not off the cards.

RCD Mallorca also got promoted last season but could be relegated again just as easily as they came up. The Balearic's premier sports team is another La Liga regular, but they've been all the way down to the third-tier, back up to La Liga, and down to the second division again in the last four years, so the stats would suggest that they're due another change this year. Spain's de facto yoyo team will be hoping to break a vicious cycle of promotion and relegation, but not many Spanish football experts are giving them a chance.

Of course, a conversation about relegation wouldn't be complete without Rayo Vallecano, a Madrid-based club that also seems to enjoy a bit of yoyoing between Spain's professional divisions. They've only just been promoted but may actually be prime candidates to go back down purely on the basis of last season's league finish. Whilst RCD Mallorca and Espanol both looked like La Liga teams in a league they shouldn't really be in, Rayo Vallecano finished sixth and were only promoted via some lucky playoff victories. Operating on a much smaller budget than the other teams in the Spanish capital – and the rest of La Liga for that matter – there's not much hope for Madrid's plucky minnows. Their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Sevilla in the opening game could prove an omen of what's to come for Rayo.
