10 Best VPNs for Hulu That Still Work in 2024

Using a VPN will allow you to stream Hulu outside of the US or Japan. However, out of all the VPNs on the market, the majority of them simply don't work with Hulu. ExpressVPN Demo

ExpressVPN Demo ExpressVPN Demo

With ExpressVPN, you're truly getting what you pay for. It's one of the more expensive providers in our list, but it's also a cut above the rest – so if you're after a service that uses innovative VPN software for all platforms, it's well worth investing in. With servers in 94 countries, ExpressVPN is ideal for unblocking Hulu from around the world.

A world of content

Express has servers dotted all over the globe, in 94 countries, to be exact, and they're all incredibly quick. There are no caps or limits to worry about, and HD streaming, gaming, and VoIP calls run smoothly without buffering hiccups – nobody wants their shows interrupted by constant stutters, right? Express' servers are also super secure, seeing as they're RAM-only – so they're wiped of all data whenever they get switched off.

ExpressVPN has no trouble accessing Hulu, no matter your current location, and can unblock a long list of other in-demand streaming services, like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime – so you'll never run out of shows and movies to stream.

Privacy defender

ExpressVPN keeps user data secure and out of the hands of snoopers with a zero-logs policy. The service has even invited the highly-respected auditing firm (and one of four big players in the auditing world), PwC, to comb through its policy, which is just what we like to see. What's more, ExpressVPN packs strong OpenVPN encryption alongside an automatically enabled kill-switch, DNS leak protection, and obfuscated (stealth) servers.

Whilst speed is going to be an important consideration for streamers, you won't want to compromise on security, and that's where the Lightway protocol comes in. Lightway has been designed by the ExpressVPN team to outshine other VPN protocols when it comes to speed and reliability, and it's much lighter than its peers, consisting of a lean 2,000 lines of code. Since Lightway connects quicker than other protocols, it's a great option for anyone who'll be doing a lot of streaming or downloading, and you can check it out with any subscription.

Full-featured functionality

You'll be able to install ExpressVPN on all sorts of platforms, including browsers and smart TVs, as well as consoles, and 24/7 customer care is available if you need help at any point. You can reach out via email or by live chat if you prefer to stay anonymous.

ExpressVPN excels at pretty much any task you throw at it – unblocking streams, boosting your security, and even running on up to 5 devices simultaneously. 5 connections are useful, certainly, but I'd like to see ExpressVPN offer a few more eventually, even though this is a relatively minor gripe about a quality service. You can trial it for yourself, too, thanks to a 30-day money-back guarantee.

NordVPN is a popular choice for Hulu. It's a big brand that offers a full security suite for its users, including ad and malware blocking, and a choice of encryption protocols to make streaming in 4K a breeze.

Nord Demo

Nord Demo Nord Demo

NordVPN is a Panama-based service that excels at unblocking popular geo-restricted content like Hulu. It'll also easily access Netflix US, Prime Video, HBO Go, and BBC iPlayer. NordVPN is also fully equipped to safeguard your digital privacy, packing a no-logs policy and advanced features such as VPN into Tor, double-hop encryption, and obfuscation.

With super-fast servers in 60 countries, NordVPN is a great pick for Hulu fans looking to get the most from their subscription and give restrictions the boot.

Global coverage

NordVPN has a staggering number of servers out there in the world, with 5,200 in 60 countries. This means you'll have unfettered access to sites like Hulu, which can otherwise use your original IP address to geo-restrict certain content or libraries. The NordVPN servers are seriously quick, too. The provider frequently rises to the top of our speed test tool. When I was testing NordVPN, I didn't have any trouble with buffering or low-quality pictures, and could access Netflix and BBC iPlayer without any trouble. The full list of services that NordVPN can unblock is pretty long – so if you're a sports fan as well as a Hulu streamer, you'll never miss another game or event.

It was especially cool to be able to stream Hulu from my smart TV thanks to its Smart DNS service. This comes with all subscriptions, though you'll need to remember that the service will not provide the same encryption as a typical VPN connection.

Premium privacy

Some VPNs skimp on security – NordVPN isn't one of them. The service is based away from EU and US jurisdictions in Panama, and doesn't keep hold of any user logs or traffic data. This no-logs claim has even been audited by the powerhouse firm, PwC.

In addition, AES 256-bit encryption keeps users secure whether they're at home or on the go, and there are a selection of protocols to pick from. I'd recommend sticking to OpenVPN if you're all about security. However, folks wanting to prioritize speed for smooth HD streaming may want to consider opting for NordLynx – NordVPN's very own light-weight, lightning-fast protocol, based around WireGuard. I like that I was able to customize the NordVPN kill-switch, too. I was able to determine which apps should be blocked by the switch in the event of a VPN dropout, and also had the option to just cut the web connection entirely.

Spoiled for choice

NordVPN really does give its users a lot of choice – you have your choice of protocols, a selection of nifty features (like Double VPN, split tunneling, and Onion Over VPN), and can even install the service on a wide selection of devices. NordVPN is compatible with Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Linux, and up to 6 simultaneous connections are supported. For unlimited connections that the whole household can enjoy, connect NordVPN to your router – it's a tricky process if you're unfamiliar with the steps, but well worth it if you have numerous gadgets to protect.

Customers also get to choose how they pay for their NordVPN subscription. You can go with a bank card, Amazon or Google pay, and even cryptocurrency, which is great if you're looking to stay as anonymous as possible. Remember that you have 30 days in which you can claim your money back if you're not impressed – though I think you will be, because NordVPN is a great service that ticks every box.

Surfshark is the Hulu VPN for you if you want a lot of bang for your buck. Not only does it work with Hulu, but also iPlayer, HBO Go & Netflix US – impressive considering the price.

Surfshark Demo

Surfshark Demo Surfshark Demo

Surfshark is a relatively new provider that's made an enormous impact on the VPN scene in the few years it's been around. Now, the service is a consumer favorite and one of our top picks for Hulu. You can try Surfshark for yourself, without risking your money, by using its 30-day money-back guarantee.

Smart streaming

Not only is Surfshark fast (thanks to unlimited bandwidth – no hidden caps or limits here), but it can also unblock a huge assortment of streaming services that other VPNs struggle to match: Netflix US & Canada, Hulu, HBO Go, Prime, Crunchyroll, BBC iPlayer, and many more. Surfshark also has no trouble unblocking social media sites, which comes in handy if you're on vacation or living somewhere where internet censorship prevents access.

Plus, if you'd prefer to stream content to your smart TV, the Surfshark Smart DNS service makes it easy to do so. There are step-by-step guides on the provider site, so you'll be ready to stream all the best US content from the comfort of your living room in just a few clicks.

Combatting snoopers and censorship

Surfshark has a solid set of privacy features, headed by a no-logs claim that has been independently audited by Cure53. I'd love to see more VPNs follow this example! Plus, being based in the British Virgin Islands means that Surfshark is not legally obligated to hold on to user logs.

You're also covered by AES 256-bit encryption and a kill-switch – just remember to head into your settings and turn the feature on first. Users can opt for the IKEv2 or OpenVPN protocols, or encrypted Shadowsocks proxy depending on preference or circumstance. Generally, Shadowsocks is used by folks attempting to bypass the Great Firewall of China by disguising their VPN traffic as normal browsing activity, so if your government is equally repressive and your internet just as restricted, you might find it useful to play with the proxy.

Unlimited connections

Surfshark's biggest bragging point is that it allows unlimited simultaneous connections. This is pretty fantastic, as it allows you to cover all the devices in your home, as well as those belonging to friends and family, if you're feeling generous. Apps are available for all platforms, including games consoles, and you can check in with the 24/7 customer support team if you have any questions or concerns. I've always been impressed by how friendly and supportive the Surfshark staff are whenever I've opened a live chat.

As you'd expect, customers get 30-days to reclaim their money if they purchase a Surfshark subscription, though a free 7-day trial is also available for Android, iOS and Mac users.

ProtonVPN is a privacy lover's VPN that also works with Hulu, provided you have the pro plan. If you do you get access to hulu and the speeds to stream it in HD.

ProtonVPN is a no-logs service developed by the nice people who re-invented privacy-focused email with their famous ProtonMail service. ProtonVPN is also known for its excellent free tier, which is so good that plenty of people use it without feeling the need to upgrade to a Pro plan.

However, whilst free users can connect to a server in the US, ProtonVPN only guarantees that Pro users will be able to access Hulu – which seems fair enough to us!

Unrestricted access

ProtonVPN has a decent spread of servers (1,314 in 55 countries, to be exact) which is fewer than some of our other Hulu picks, but still more than enough to unblock content from across the globe. These servers are quick, with up to 10 Gbps connections, and ProtonVPN's VPN Accelerator feature can even boost speeds by 400%. It's great to see that the Accelerator is available for all ProtonVPN apps and VPN protocols, and is enabled by default.

The VPN can readily access Hulu, as well as a selection of Netflix and Amazon Prime libraries. If you're a Plus plan subscriber, you'll even have access to streaming support that makes unblocking content that much easier.

A stack of security features

ProtonVPN has a hugely impressive security offering – which is just what you'd expect from a VPN developed by CERN scientists! With your subscription, you'll benefit from VPN through Tor, robust kill-switches in all its (open source) apps, and effective IP leak protection, along with strong AES 256-bit encryption. ProtonVPN supports OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols, which is great to see, and Perfect Forward Secrecy is another fantastic bonus.

With Perfect Forward Secrecy, you can rest assured that any transactions you make online are safe and secure. This encryption system changes the keys used to encrypt and decrypt information each time you reload a page, send a message, or begin a call, and that means that there's less identifiable data for hackers to get their hands on.

The service also prides itself on a no-logs policy protected by Swiss privacy laws. ProtonVPN has also invested in audits for all of its software – these are not, however, yet available to the public. ProtonVPN has also been in the news recently for being forced to cooperate with Swiss authorities. As such, some prospective users may feel more comfortable looking elsewhere for a Hulu VPN.

More for your money

ProtonVPN is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS devices, as well as routers, and allows for up to 10 simultaneous connections. This is a pretty decent amount that'll adequately cover the devices in most homes. If you're interested in checking out ProtonVPN for yourself (and you should, seeing as it comes with a lot of cool features – like NetShield, which banishes ads and trackers), you can do so by using its 30-day money-back guarantee!

PrivateVPN Demo

PrivateVPN Demo PrivateVPN Demo

PrivateVPN is a Swedish VPN service that has amassed an incredibly loyal subscriber base. Whilst it doesn't have the server numbers of other services we've highlighted, PrivateVPN can access a multitude of streaming services thanks to its dedicated dynamic IPs. PrivateVPN is extremely budget-friendly, too, but still performs just as well as many vastly more expensive services on the market.

I've been impressed time and again by the service's exceptional customer service team and easy-to-use apps – so VPN beginners should really take advantage of the 30-day free-trial, and start watching Hulu from anywhere in the world.

Streaming specialist

PrivateVPN can unblock Hulu in just a few clicks. Plus, users will have their pick of content from BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime, and Disney+. The VPN is also particularly adept at unblocking Netflix, thanks to dynamic dedicated IP addresses, and navigating around annoying YouTube restrictions is just as straightforward. I also want to reiterate just how quick PrivateVPN is! This is in part due to the High Quality Network servers that allow the VPN to go toe-to-toe with other, larger, services when it comes to speed.

Some prospective users might be put off by PrivateVPN's relatively small server pool spanning 63 countries. It's important to remember that the service is still quite young, however! I can vouch for the reliability of these servers even so, especially for torrenting, and PrivateVPN itself recommends connecting to locations in Sweden for P2P activity.

Private by name

PrivateVPN well and truly lives up to its name. Its zero-logs policy means that no user data is stored ready to hand over to authorities, and whilst Sweden isn't exactly a privacy safe haven, PrivateVPN has assured us that it has full access to its central data and even owns its own hardware. That's great news, as is the IPv6 and DNS leak protection – vital for torrenters, especially.

As per the industry standard, AES 256-bit encryption keeps connections secure, along with a selection of robust protocols. Again, I recommend using OpenVPN wherever you can, though some users might opt for IKEv2 if speed is their main concern. The PrivateVPN kill-switch can be customized to affect the entire web connection or just specific, nominated apps, and works in tandem with a handy auto-connect feature that'll get you back up and running when the VPN connection returns.

Compatibility across the board

You'll be able to install PrivateVPN on just about any device in the home; Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and Linux included, as well as routers, if they're compatible. 6 simultaneous connections isn't the most generous offer, but should still be enough to share between family members or protect your important devices.

You can trial PrivateVPN for 7-days, for free, and if you do decide to take the plunge and purchase a subscription, don't be afraid to reach out to the customer service team if issues arise. When I spoke with them, they were quick to respond and incredibly helpful, and you can really tell that they're in-house developers who know their stuff. They're available 24/7 via live chat or email – though I'm sure you won't have too much trouble with this outstanding VPN.

6. VyprVPN

VyprVPN is an indepentently-audited, feature-rich provider that can unblock a wealth of streaming and sports services, without sacrificing your security.

VYPR Demo

VYPR Demo VYPR Demo

VyprVPN packs an enormous amount of utility into a price tag that's incredibly modest. One subscription will bag you 30 simultaneous connections, a full suite of security tools that'll deter even the most dedicated snoopers, and access to more streaming services than you can shake a stick at. Plus, you can put the service to the test in your own time, thanks to a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Stress-free streaming

Admittedly, VyprVPN doesn't have the most expansive network of servers compared to some other VPNs in this guide, but 700 servers in 70 locations is still no small feat! Not to mention, they're all quick enough to handle HD streaming! Unblocking US content, like Hulu and Netflix, is a breeze, and VyprVPN also has no trouble when it comes to accessing other services (Amazon Prime and HBO included) and even sports sites (like DAZN, ESPN, and Sky Sports). So, no matter what you're in the mood to watch, VyprVPN can help you out.

I particularly like how easy it is to hop from server to server with VyprVPN. The service enables dynamic switching, so you can avoid servers that are congested or otherwise unavailable and get back to streaming without interruptions.

The total security package

VyprVPN really excels when it comes to security. AES 256-bit encryption keeps snoops from tracking your online activity, and the service supports a number of protocols, including the super speedy WireGuard and our favorite, OpenVPN. VyprVPN's proprietary protocol, Chameleon, might also be worth checking out if you're an avid streamer living somewhere with imposing internet restrictions. Chameleon makes it possible to bypass firewalls imposed by your government, ISP, or administrators and access content that might otherwise have been censored! VyprVPN does permit P2P activity, too, but be sure to enable the (customizable) kill-switch before you torrent anything.

It's encouraging to see that VyprVPN makes its home in Switzerland. That's great news for privacy, although the VPN's parent firm does have offices in Texas, which may be a point of concern for folks worried about the NSA. However, VyprVPN has taken the time to invite an independent third-party to audit its no-logs policy, so I'm happy to consider the service secure.

Round-the-clock reliability

As mentioned earlier, VyprVPN offers a whopping 30 simultaneous connections. You just don't see this kind of generosity from every provider, so if you have a lot of devices in the house, or family and friends you'd like to share your subscription with, then VyprVPN could be a perfect match. The provider is compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices, as well as routers, and you'll even be able to use VyprVPN with your smart TV. And, for any questions or concerns that arise, head over to the VyprVPN site and reach out to the customer service team, available 24/7 via live chat or email.

CyberGhost Demo

CyberGhost Demo CyberGhost Demo

If you're looking for a VPN that's able to access Hulu from overseas, all without breaking the bank, then CyberGhost is a superb option. This provider has a wealth of servers in key locations ideal for streaming, and they're all quick enough to support HD viewing, gaming, and internet calls. CyberGhost is compatible with all platforms and allows for 10 simultaneous connections. This makes it particularly useful to anyone with a large number of devices – or anyone shopping for a deal for the family!

Start your streaming marathon

CyberGhost has 7,000 servers in 91 countries, which is an impressive tally, and should enable you to unblock content from every corner of the globe. To make matters easier, there are dedicated servers available for streaming, torrenting, and ultimate privacy. As you'd expect from one of the industry leaders, CyberGhost doesn't impose any bandwidth or traffic limits, and can beat ISP throttling, preventing annoying lag spikes or buffering circles when you're tying to enjoy a show.

Just like ExpressVPN and NordVPN, CyberGhost is adept at unblocking streaming services. This is great value for money – some VPNs can only really access Netflix US, but with CyberGhost, you'll be able to browse through Netflix, HBO, Amazon Prime, and Disney+, amongst others.

Cybersecurity in focus

CyberGhost keeps its connections super secure with AES 256-bit encryption. This is doubly important if you're going to be accessing Wi-Fi hotspots or traveling overseas. The service also protects users from DNS and IP leaks, comes with an automatic kill-switch, and even implements the up-and-coming WireGuard protocol. All of this is great news for security buffs, and goes a long way to dispelling some concerns users might have about CyberGhost's parent company, KAPE Technologies.

The no-logs policy enforced by the VPN should also allay fears. CyberGhost doesn't store user data, and isn't even required to by law, seeing as it's based in Romania, where data retention is not mandatory. Romania is also not a part of the 5 or 14 Eyes surveillance alliance. Although CyberGhost has had its no-logs policy audited in the past, it's almost been ten years since, and I'd like to see the company undertake another audit in the near future.

Tech accessibility

Admittedly, there are other providers out there with more features, but CyberGhost is still a great VPN for beginners or anyone looking for a service that's not overly-techy. That being said, CyberGhost does allow split tunneling, which is always a nice bonus. The VPN is compatible with all devices, including smart TVs, games consoles, and routers, and allows up to 7 simultaneous connections.

We love that CyberGhost provides a 45-day money-back guarantee, which means you can unblock Hulu on vacation for free if you want. Plus, it's possible to pay for your subscription via your Crypto wallet!

IPVanish is a great VPN pick for Hulu, but where it really shines is its privacy. Expect a strict no-logs policy and more features than you can shake a stick at with this VPN.

IPVanish Demo

IPVanish Demo IPVanish Demo

IPVanish is a solid VPN that comes with some great apps for all platforms – and users can install the software on an unlimited number of devices simultaneously with just one subscription! There are cheaper VPNs on the market, admittedly, but IPVanish packs a kill-switch, obfuscation (stealth), and other tough privacy features, so it's well worth the price tag.

If you're unsure, you can try out those features yourself by taking advantage of IPVanish's 30-day money-back guarantee.

Explore new content

IPVanish has an impressive amount of server coverage across the globe, with more than 1,900 servers in 75 locations. Almost the entirety of these Tier 1 servers are owned by the VPN, which also allows P2P activity – great news for folks who plan on making use of torrents.

Unblocking Hulu with IPVanish is straightforward, and the service can also unblock Netflix US if you connect to servers in Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, or Chicago. Unfortunately, because IPVanish doesn't officially support other Netflix libraries, we can't guarantee access to additional international catalogs.

American-made

IPVanish makes its home in the United States, and that's bound to put some people off the service, seeing as the country has a pretty bad record when it comes to surveillance, warrants and gag orders. However, IPVanish also abides by a watertight no-logs policy that ensures that no records are kept. If the authorities came knocking, there'd be nothing to hand over to them in the first place.

The IPVanish security setup is a lot more encouraging. AES 256-bit encryption does a fantastic job of shoring up your online security, and a number of VPN protocols are available – OpenVPN and WireGuard included. As I've mentioned previously, WireGuard is a relatively new protocol that's already generating a buzz, seeing as it's already one of the quickest and most secure options available. Plus, a kill-switch and DNS leak protection prevent your identifiable details from getting into the hands of snoopers, like your ISP or government.

Secure the whole house

IPVanish can be installed on any Windows, Mac, Android, or iOS device, is compatible with Linux and routers, and allows unlimited simultaneous connections. That's ideal if you've got multiple people in the house who are all interested in doing their own geo-hopping!

Ideally, I'd like to see IPVanish accept cryptocurrency payments, but for those looking for an additional layer of anonymity, XOR obfuscated servers are effective against DPI (deep packet inspection) and can even bypass some VPN bans.

Ivacy Demo

Ivacy Demo Ivacy Demo

Ivacy is a stand-out service and a great pick for anyone who plans to stream from Hulu, as well as other popular services. The VPN can access a ton of content from around the globe, thanks to an impressive network of servers, and blazing speeds make for smooth, lag-free pictures and easy P2P downloading.

As always, you can try Ivacy without risk by taking advantage of its 30-day money-back guarantee. If you decide you'd like to stick with your subscription, you have a myriad of ways to do so! Use your credit card, PayPal account, or even purchase your plan with Bitcoin.

Easy streaming

Checking out geo-restricted content with Ivacy is as simple as connecting to any of its 3,500 servers in over 100 locations. In addition to Hulu, Ivacy can unblock Amazon Prime and BBC iPlayer, as well as 16 international Netflix libraries, including the popular (and well-stocked) US, UK, and Japan catalogues. The VPN also comes with a dedicated Kodi app, and is perfect for sports fans and Hulu customers who've purchased the Live TV addon – basically, you won't miss another minute of the action, whether it's live or you're catching up.

Ivacy is really, really fast. The VPN even frequently outperforms more expensive VPNs when it comes to speed. This is just what you want to hear from a service you plan to use for streaming – nobody wants to be stuck waiting for their shows or movies to buffer, right? Plus, Ivacy's top-notch speed makes BitTorrent downloading a breeze, and nearly all the provider's servers are P2P friendly.

Safeguarding your sessions

Ivacy uses AES 256-bit encryption to keep user information and traffic secure. So, whether you're using Ivacy at home to geo-hop, or whether you're out and about and relying on risky Wi-Fi hotspots, you'll have nothing to worry about. Ivacy further bulks up its security offering with IPv6 and DNS leak protection, which will ensure that potential snoopers (like the authorities and your ISP) can't keep tabs on what you're doing. A kill-switch is a great additional feature, and cuts your internet connection if your VPN stops working for any reason – you'll just need to make sure that you enable it, first.

I'm encouraged by Ivacy's no-logs policy, and being based in Singapore means that the provider isn't required to log user activity by law, either. Less encouraging is the fact that Ivacy has not invited independent auditors to examine this logging policy, however, and the lack of the WireGuard protocol may deter some prospective customers (though OpenVPN is a secure alternative).

Extensive support

With Ivacy, you'll get up to 10 simultaneous connections, meaning the whole family can log into the service and stream via their own devices. Or, you can simply connect each and every one of your gadgets! Ivacy is compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Linux systems, and has Chrome, Firefox, and Edge browser extensions, too.

For any questions that arise, the Ivacy customer support team is available 24/7 to help out, and you can reach them via support ticket, email, or live chat.

StrongVPN Demo

StrongVPN Demo StrongVPN Demo

StrongVPN is another service that well and truly lives up to its name, offering robust security measures alongside impressive unblocking capabilities. Customers will be able to comb through Hulu libraries without any fuss and enjoy a smooth, HD stream every time. Plus, StrongVPN also comes with a free Smart DNS feature!

The service is easy to install and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, as you'd expect, though only two subscription plans are available. These annual and monthly plans offer the same features and level of service, however, so you don't have to worry about figuring out which features you'll get – the only difference is that only annual subscribers benefit from the money-back guarantee.

The key to global content

StrongVPN doesn't have the most expansive server network out there, but 950 servers spread across 30 countries is still an impressive feat, and more than enough to facilitate geo-hopping! In fact, StrongVPN excels when it comes to unblocking content. You'll be able to stream Hulu, Netflix US, and Amazon Prime, though the VPN sadly struggles to unblock BBC iPlayer, meaning fans of British classics will need to look elsewhere. However, StrongVPN sweetens the pot by including Amazon Fire TV Stick and Kodi support, so you'll likely never run out of content to binge, and even a Smart DNS feature! This service makes it much easier to unblock these streaming services, though you'll need to bear in mind that they don't offer the same encryption as a regular VPN.

Finally, StrongVPN boasts impressive speeds that often go toe-to-toe with some of the more well-known providers on this list. As such, streaming, gaming, and torrenting are all more than viable.

Peace and privacy

It's great to see StrongVPN offering a broad selection of protocols, including WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2. AES 256-bit encryption likewise ensures that your traffic remains unreadable to any snoopers trying to sneak a peek. The StrongVPN kill-switch is currently only available to Windows users, which is pretty disappointing, so you may prefer to shop elsewhere if you frequent other apps or platforms.

StrongVPN is based in America, which, frankly, is a red flag. The United States is also home to the CIA and NSA, and gag orders and warrants can be used to force VPN firms to quietly hand over user data at any point. Despite this, StrongVPN implements a no-logs policy that should reassure the majority of users, as there'll simply be no logs to give up, even if the service is served with a warrant from the authorities.

Support for you and your devices

Installing StrongVPN on pretty much any device is a breeze. Apps are available for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices, as well as a selection of routers. A Chrome browser extension also comes in handy for Chromebook users looking to keep their device safe at home and when traveling. I'm impressed by the 12 simultaneous connections offered by the service, as this is roughly double the amount that'll you'll get from other, more premium, providers!

The StrongVPN customer service team are superb, too. They were able to field my questions without trouble and are contactable 24/7 via live chat and email (though tech staff are only around during the week, it seems).

How to watch Hulu outside of the US and Japan with a VPN

Using a VPN to unblock Hulu is easy, particularly if you already have an account. Below we explain how to regain access to your account – or purchase a subscription if you haven't got one yet.

  1. Sign up for the VPN service that suits you best.
  2. Next, download and install the VPN app onto your device(s).
  3. Open the VPN app and select a server in either Japan or the USA.
  4. Head on over to the Hulu app/website to stream.

If you need to sign up and pay for Hulu from overseas, follow the steps below!

How do I sign up for Hulu if it isn't available in my country?

If you don't already have a subscription, there are some extra steps in order to get one. With a VPN, you can easily pretend to be in the US to sign up for a Hulu account. However, you still need to pay using a valid local payment method.

One option is to buy a Hulu voucher online. These are a code that will be delivered to your email address. Another excellent method is to use the virtual card provider US Unlocked. US Unlocked has the ability to "unlock" US-only shopping options to people living outside the US.

A US Unlocked virtual prepaid card comes with a valid US billing address. This will let you sign up and pay for Hulu (or any other US service that takes your fancy) from just about anywhere in the world!

Get US Unlocked

You can find out more about virtual cards by visiting our guide. US Unlocked is by far the best of those services because it will easily allow you to pay for Hulu.

How does a VPN work?

A VPN is designed to provide you with online privacy. It works by encrypting your data and sending it to a VPN server. This ensures that local network administrators, Internet Service Providers, and government authorities are unable to track your data as it passes over the internet.

A byproduct of this system is that your actual location is concealed from the online websites and services you use. Thus, by connecting to a VPN server in the USA, Hulu believes that you are actually in the location of the VPN server. For more information, check out our unblocking Hulu guide.

Will free VPNs work with Hulu?

No, there are no free VPNs that are capable of both unblocking and streaming Hulu. There are some free VPN services that we recommend available on the market, but these are often limited stripped back versions of premium VPNs designed to give users a taste in the hope they will upgrade. In reality, free VPNs can offer fast enough speeds for streaming, or server location for unblocking content like Hulu.

If you're truly adamant about going with a free service, we'd recommend sticking to the providers featured in our best free VPNs list – they're reliable, trustworthy, and won't nab your data. You can also try one of the methods outlined below.

Take advantage of free trials

It is possible to get a limited time trial of a permium VPN that does work with Hulu. All you need to do is sign up for their free trial and then you can have full access to a VPN for a limited amount of time.

Want to know more? Check out our free VPN for Hulu guide for more information.

Cheap VPNs for Hulu

VPNs don't need to cost the world, and it is possible to find a cheap VPN for Hulu, provided you know what you're looking for. A number of the VPNs we feature above can be less than $3 a month, and they often become cheaper the longer that you sign up for.

If you would like to learn more, check out our best cheap VPNs list.

How does Hulu block VPN users from accessing their services?

Hulu will block an IP address if it discovers that it belongs to a VPN provider. Hulu doesn't want its customers using a VPN to access its content outside of the US – the service spends an awful lot of time, money, and effort to block VPN IP addresses. If you suspect your VPN is being blocked, read on for some tips and tricks to get it working again.

What to do if your VPN isn't working with Hulu?

Hulu knows that people all over the world attempt to access its service using a VPN. Because of the licensing agreements, it has with copyright holders, it must make every effort to prevent this. As a result, Hulu actively blocks IP addresses known to belong to VPNs.

These concerted efforts mean that very few VPNs are able to unblock Hulu. This is why it's so important to avoid disappointment and pick a service that can access the site. As it happens, all of the VPNs in this guide have proven that they can stay one step ahead of Hulu. They're able to evade blocks and restrictions to provide you with unfettered access to the site and all its content!

However, if you find that you cannot access Hulu with a VPN that is supposed to work, you can follow the fixes below to get the VPN up and running.

Try a different server

It may be the case that Hulu has banned the particular VPN IP address that you're using. By connecting to a different server, you get a new IP address and, provided it hasn't been banned, you can continue accessing Hulu. All of the services on our list have lots of US servers so you can connect to another server to easily get a USA IP address .

Contact your provider

If you are struggling to find a server to work with Hulu, try contacting your provider. We realize that this may sound like a cop-out, but all the providers on our list have excellent customer service via their website live-chat. Their representatives can quickly point you to a server that does work with Hulu to save you from having to find one through trial and error.

If none of these fixes work, don't despair. We cover more tips and methods to get your Hulu VPN working again in our Hulu VPN troubleshooting guide

The Hulu home location error

Hulu requires its customers to set a home network so that you can tune in to local content – and so that the service can make sure you're not trying to share your subscription. So, whilst you'll be able to access Hulu content from devices in your own home, any friends or family with the login won't be able to do the same in their own houses.

We'd recommend sticking to one of the VPN providers in this article if you're experiencing this error – they have reliable servers in the United States and unrivaled unblocking power. Additionally, if you can use a static or dedicated IP address, you should, as solving the home network error with a VPN can be tricky, seeing as your IP address will probably change each time you connect.

Next, you're going to need to update your home network. You can do so by following these simple steps:

  1. Log out of your Hulu account
  2. Log back into your account on a streaming device; a smart TV, Firestick, Roku, Chromecast, or games console is ideal
  3. Navigate to the Hulu account page
  4. Open the Privacy and Settings menu
  5. Select Set or Change Home to establish your network

Hulu may also display the home network error to those using unreliable VPNs or a shared Wi-Fi network.

If you're having trouble with this error when accessing Hulu on your mobile or laptop, it might be worth checking in to the service to establish that you're within the home network – just sign in whilst connected to the network to do so. One final thing to bear in mind is that you can only change your home network four times a year.

Does Express VPN work for Netflix as well and does it work in Australia?

Hi Amanda, ExpressVPN works for US Netflix (its IPs may occasionally get banned, but it always soon gets things working again). It also works just fine in Australia (and, indeed, runs servers there). I do not know if it works for Australian Netfix, though (but its 24/7 Live Chat support will be able to tell you this).

Is there any extra work around once installing one of these. I recently moved to Korea and downloaded express VPN and hulu says I'm running through a proxy vpn and will not allow me to play anything.

Hi Justin, Not really. These blocks are simple IP blocks of IPs known to belong to VPN providers. ExpressVPN works with US Netflix and BBC iPlayer, so it might be worth talking to it about this issue. If that fails, then try a less well-known VPN service or Smart DNS instead (Smart DNS is less likley to be blocked, but can be).
