How to change country on a Fire TV Stick

If you wish to spoof your location on an Amazon Fire TV stick (aka Firestick), then you will need to use a VPN service.

The following instructions are only useful if you have moved country and want to officially re-register your Firestick to your new location. Note that the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick only fully work in the following countries:

If you have an Amazon Prime account, you can stream Prime exclusive content (only) from more countries using your Firestick. But most other apps and content will not work because of geographic licensing resections. Using a VPN on a Firestick may help here though.

The Fire TV Cube only works in the United States.

How to change country

To re-register your Fire Stick in another supported country you must first register your new address with Amazon.

1. Sign-in to your account on the Amazon web page and visit Manage Your Content and Devices -> Preferences -> Country/Region Settings.

2. Click on the Preferences tab -> Country/Region Settings -> Change.

3. You can then change Country of Residence. It requires a valid postal address. When done, hit Update.

4. When you first use the Firestick in your new country you will need to go through the entire setup process again – just like you did when you first purchased the device.

How to change your location on the Fire Stick itself

You can only change your location on the Fire Stick within the country the Fire stick is registered to with Amazon (see above). This is mainly only useful for receiving localized weather updates from Alexa.

1. Visit Settings -> Preferences -> Location.

2. Enter your new post/zip code and click Next.

How to change Fire Stick region with a VPN

Want to get the most out of your Amazon Prime subscription and unblock geo-restricted content (and check out other streaming services from across the globe) via your Fire Stick? You'll need a way to look as though you're living in the same region as the shows, movies, or sites you want to stream, and you can do this by changing your IP address.

This might sound overly complicated, but the good news is that you can change your IP address and check out international content by using a VPN. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Pick a VPN provider from our recommendations below and install its Firestick app – this should only take a moment or two.
  2. Log in to your VPN app and connect to a server in the same region as your content or streaming service of choice.
  3. Wait until you've connected to the server.
  4. Then visit your streaming app, starting it if necessary, and enjoy geo-restricted content from anywhere in the world.

Some of the best VPNs in the business even have their very own dedicated apps for Fire Stick and Fire TV – as well as a whole host of additional privacy enhancing features.

How we pick VPNs for Fire TV - VPN testing methodology

There are many competing VPNs on the market and finding a reliable provider that has apps for an Amazon Fire TV stick is not easy. Many VPNs lie about the level of protection they provide or have slow servers that cause too much buffering when streaming on a Firestick.

At ProPrivacy, we understand how easy it is to end up with an inferior VPN that is a total waste of money. That is why we have devised a precise VPN testing methodology that we use to compare market-leading services.

Our testing method allows us to directly compare VPNs using constant metrics. This is how we can confidently rate one VPN provider above another. This review process leaves no room for doubt because it checks things like server locations, app security, leak protection, and connection speeds to find the best VPNs for a particular use case.

Below, we have included some of the things we looked for when recommending the best VPNs for Amazon Fire TV devices:
