How will a VPN unblock Sky Go?

Simply put, a VPN is a privacy tool that encrypts your data and changes your IP address to make it appear as though you are in a different country. This tricks websites into thinking you are actually located elsewhere, which can help defeat censorship and get around geo-restrictions.

Using a VPN to pretend to be in England lets you bypass Sky Go restrictions. In order to stream Sky Go abroad, all you'll need to do is download a VPN that supports the unblocking of UK streaming services, connect to a UK server, and then open up the Sky Go app! You can also use a VPN for BBC iPlayer or to unblock Netflix's various different libraries.

If you're new to VPNs, you can use our guides to learn more about this awesome technology:

What is Sky Go?

Sky Go is an online streaming service provided at no extra cost to Sky TV subscribers in the UK. For any Sky subscribers who are traveling outside of the UK, Sky Go is unavailable due to geo-restrictions. This means you will need a Sky VPN to stream your favorite shows or sports competitions while on holiday.

If you want to stream Premier League football while traveling outside of Britain, or if you want to tune in to a F1 race or live cricket stream, you'll need to subscribe to a VPN.

How to set up the Sky Go app

If you are an existing Sky customer but you aren’t currently using Sky Go, all you have to do is:

  1. Download the Sky Go app from your app store.
  2. Install the Sky Go app onto your smartphone, tablet, or computer.
  3. Register the app to your account using your email and Sky ID.

How to watch Sky Go abroad?

Once you've installed the Sky Go app on your device and logged into your account, you're almost ready to start streaming! Before you do so, however, you'll need to make sure your IP address appears to be in the UK. You may also need to disable GPS on your device to ensure that it is not providing Sky with your real location.

  1. Subscribe to a VPN from this guide.
  2. Download the VPN software.
  3. Install the VPN and log in using your credentials.
  4. Connect to a UK server (check with your VPN because it may be a specific server).
  5. Open the Sky Go app and start watching!

How does a VPN help me watch Sky Go abroad?

The only way to watch Sky Go outside of the UK is to use a VPN. However, to watch Sky Go with a VPN you will require a service that:

All our recommended VPNs have been selected based on the above criteria. They're guaranteed to work with Sky Go, and each service has 24/7 customer service in case you need a helping hand.

Remember

Not all VPNs can successfully unblock all services, so it's important to make sure you're subscribed to one that can.

Do I need a Sky account to stream on Sky Go?

Yes. Unlike BBC iPlayer, which is free in the UK, Sky is only available with a subscription. And, Sky is only available with a full setup satellite dish, which means you need to have a house in the UK in order to purchase a subscription and have an engineer come to your house to set up your Sky box.

The good news is that if you have friends or family living in the UK, you can contact them and ask them for their login details. This will allow you to use their account from abroad.

How many devices can I watch Sky Go on?

Sky Go will only let you watch streams on two registered devices. For this reason, you'll only ever be able to connect to Sky Go (inside or outside of the UK) on those two devices. This makes it trickier to ask your friends or family to give you their details. However, as long as they don't mind streaming Sky Go on one device (and their TV) only, then you might be able to convince them to let you be their second device!

If one of your devices is broken or you want to change the two devices that are currently set up to access Sky Go (to let a friend or family member use the account from abroad) - follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to go.sky.com
  2. Log in to your account and click Settings > Manage Devices
  3. Select one of your two devices and click Remove
  4. You can now register a new device as usual

Please Note

Sky limits how often you can change your devices to once a month. If you require more devices, you can pay £5 per month for Sky Go Extra which will increase the number of devices you are permitted to four.

Can I watch Sky Q abroad?

Yes, both Sky+ HD and Sky Q subscribers are permitted to use the Sky Go App. However, to watch Sky Q abroad you will need a VPN to watch Sky Go streams overseas.

Can I watch Sky Go abroad with a free VPN?

Unfortunately, if you're wondering whether it's possible to use a free VPN to watch Sky Go, the answer is that it's unlikely.

Free VPNs are notoriously slow and often have capped bandwidth and speeds that aren't ideal for streaming. Services like Sky Go do their best to block IP addresses belonging to VPNs, and most free VPNs will struggle to bypass these restrictions. There are a number of free VPNs that do make the cut, however!

The best option when it comes to getting a free VPN for Sky Go is to get one of the premium services in this guide and use its money-back guarantee. Our recommended Sky VPNs all allow users to change their minds and receive a full refund. The majority of VPN providers will offer a 30-day money-back guarantee when you sign up, but be sure to check out our summaries, as some offer up to 45 days to get your money back!

What to do if your VPN doesn’t work with Sky Go

Firstly, be sure that you've subscribed to a provider that works with Sky Go. We'd then recommend following the steps outlined below to get your service back up and running.

It is possible that Sky is blocking your VPN, so check with your provider to get advice if it suddenly stops working.

  1. Uninstall the Sky Go app and reinstall it.
  2. Make sure the time and date on your device are set to be the same as the UK.
  3. Check with your VPN provider to find out which server in the UK is best.
  4. Clear your cookies to ensure that your PC isn't revealing your real location.
  5. Try a different browser and use private browsing mode.
  6. Turn off GPS on your mobile device, or disable it in your browser on PC.
  7. Try using a different encryption protocol.
  8. Ensure that your device is listed as one of the two permitted mobile devices in your sky account by going to Settings > Manage devices.

Sky VPN access - Conclusion

Sky Go is by far the easiest way to watch Sky TV on a mobile device. If you are leaving the UK on business or are about to go on vacation, we strongly recommend that you get a trusted and reliable VPN for Sky Go.

If you live outside of the UK - but you know someone with a Sky account in Britain - you may want to have a conversation with them. Because if they share their password with you - you should be able to access it with a VPN.

A VPN will not only let you access Sky Go, but it will enable you to watch BBC iPlayer abroad, and US Netflix as well. Plus, you will be able to access tons of other services securely from all around the world. A VPN will also protect you from hackers when you connect to public WiFi in airports, coffee shops, restaurants, and hotels. And give you privacy at home by preventing ISP tracking.

We think the cost of a VPN service is extremely low considering the privacy, security, and freedom you get! So if you want to unblock Sky Go or any other service, be sure to try one of our recommended VPNs.

Hi Stephen. Well... ExpressVPN is answering by email only at the moment, but that doesn't mean you can't send a request for help on this issue.

I tried NORD VPN and Express VPN. Express is definitely better (a bit more expensive) and also works with Netflix

This article needs updating because as others have commented, NordVPN does not work with Sky Go and hasn't for some time. I changed to PrivateVPN when my subscription finished and I couldn't be happier. Super reliable and no buffering at all. They have a unique server just for Sky which is such a good idea.
