If you're in Jamaica on vacation – or you live there full time – and you want to access geo-blocked content from outside of the country, you'll need a VPN.
In this article, we'll run through the best VPNs to use whilst you're in Jamaica, and exactly why we've chosen to recommend them.
Best VPNs for Jamaica
If you want a quick answer then take a look at the list of the best VPNs for Jamaica below. For more information, check out our detailed summaries.
- NordVPN - The best VPN for Jamaica. It's a budget-friendly option that doesn't skimp on privacy, features, or security. Offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- ExpressVPN - An all-around VPN service for Jamaica. A VPN industry titan that's super fast and excellent at unlocking from around the world.
- Private Internet Access - A secure VPN for Jamaica, with a no-logs claim proven in court. Offers great apps and features, especially if you're a Linux user.
- CyberGhost VPN - An easy-to-use VPN for Jamaica that has servers optimised for streaming all around the world. Offers NoSpy servers as well.
- HMA - A great VPN for getting Jamaica IPs. It has servers in the country and worldwide, and an excellent record at unblocking content.
Why are these the best VPNs for Jamaica
VPNs have a multitude of features and use cases, and there's a broad range of reasons why you might want one. That being said, if you're in the market for a VPN for Jamaica, things you'll need to consider include:
- The size and spread of a provider's server network
- Servers in countries you want to unblock content from
- Whether there are servers in Jamaica/the Caribbean
- How robust and up-to-date the security features are
- Value for money and standard of customer service
And don't worry too much about getting a provider with servers in Jamaica unless you want to stream content from Jamaica itself (like a popular Jamaican TV show), in which case you'll need HMA or PureVPN.
Best VPNs for Jamaica: a closer look
Here is a list of the best Jamaica VPN services:
NordVPN is the best VPN for accessing international content in Jamaica. It is a blazing-fast, privacy-conscious VPN, with a string of highly configurable features. Nord Demo NordVPN is a Panama-based VPN with lots to offer users, whatever their use case. The provider has a collection of excellent security features that I'll talk about in more detail further down in this section, and it also affords all subscribers a maximum of 6 simultaneous connections through one account. Like its competitors, NordVPN also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee – so if you finish reading this review of the provider and are still unsure if it's the right VPN for you, you can test it out without worrying about signing up for the long run. NordVPN can certainly stake a claim to be the fastest VPN out there – although some other providers like Ivacy may give them a close run, NordVPN is always near the top of our daily speed tests. This makes it an excellent choice for streaming content from across the world from Jamaica, as the last thing you want if your data is traveling long distances is a slow service. You need a speedy provider for streaming because VPNs send your data on a longer route to the internet, so they inevitably slow your connection down marginally – that's just a fact of the technology we can't really do anything about. It's about making that difference as negligible as possible, and in my opinion, NordVPN is one of the best for the job. NordVPN is one of the few providers to have developed their own, original protocol designed to improve speeds and security whilst you stream. NordLynx is a technology wrapped around the lightning-quick WireGuard protocol and it's the best chance you have of securing a buffer-free stream. Some VPN providers like to stretch their servers across as many locations as possible, but NordVPN does it slightly differently. Although NordVPN offers servers in 60 countries
"only" (fewer than providers like HMA and ExpressVPN), it has thousands of servers across these locations, which means they're rarely congested. Plus, you can check the server locations on NordVPN's website before you download anything to make sure the provider has servers in the countries you want to stream content from whilst in Jamaica. NordVPN has a number of features that set it apart from the crowd. NordVPN has one of the best ad and malware blockers available to prospective VPN customers, and in my experience, it's been great at blocking unwanted content from my screen when I use their service. If privacy is your top priority, you might find Double VPN – a function that will reroute your traffic through two private servers instead of one, and there are also tools like 'Onion Over VPN' which combines the merits of Tor with a virtual private network. Of course, NordVPN also has standard security features like a kill-switch and uses the AES-256 bit standard to encrypt all user traffic. ExpressVPN is a provider built for streaming that'll unblock pretty much anything from the 94 countries it has servers in. ExpressVPN Demo ExpressVPN may not have servers in Jamaica, but it does have a well-maintained, global network of servers, consistently fast speeds, and a team you can trust to keep your internet experience private. You can use one ExpressVPN account on as many as five devices simultaneously, so you don't even have to log in if you switch from your phone or tablet to your laptop, and your friends or family who might be holidaying with you out in Jamaica can use it too. In terms of security, you don't need to look any further than ExpressVPN. If you want to be assured that your browsing sessions are private and secure, then this is certainly a shrewd choice. ExpressVPN uses TrustedServer technology, which essentially means all the servers in their network run exclusively off RAM. RAM is a type of memory that needs power to store things, so as soon as a server is powered down, all the data is lost and nothing is ever written to a hard drive. ExpressVPN also has a kill-switch, which will drop your internet connection if the VPN disconnects and means you'll never spend any time online without your traffic encrypted. The provider uses the AES-256 encryption standard, which is considered to be extremely secure and used by a lot of different types of organizations (governments, corporations etc) that deal with classified data. If you're accessing content that might be censored in Jamaica, then it's vital you choose a VPN provider with a great track record on privacy and features that will genuinely keep you safe ExpressVPN is certainly one of the top VPNs when it comes to circumventing geo-restrictions and unblocking content from around the world. It offers thousands of active servers across 94 countries
worldwide – that's a lot of different locations to choose from. ExpressVPN does have, in fairness to the provider, servers in The Bahamas, so an IP address there might help you unblock content restricted to the Caribbean. There are also a number of US servers to choose from. Unblocking Netflix libraries from various different countries is something ExpressVPN does very well, and torrenting is well-supported too. The provider even has a Smart DNS service called MediaStreamer which can be used to spoof your location and make streaming even faster (it doesn't, however, provide the encryption a VPN connection will). Admittedly, ExpressVPN is more expensive than most VPN providers. However, it's certainly got the features, speeds, and both ability and desire to uphold its privacy policy that you'd expect from a provider charging what ExpressVPN charges. If you'd like to reserve your judgment until you test it out yourself, as I did, then just use the 30-day money-back guarantee the provider offers to all new customers! Private Internet Access is a super-reliable VPN that has had its claim to keep no logs proven in court – more than once, too! PIA Demo Private Internet Access (PIA) might not have any servers in Jamaica, but it has thousands in the neighboring USA, a country with a tonne of sought-after geo-restricted content locked inside it. If you're looking to unblock content from the US and other parts of the world whilst in Jamaica, PIA is a solid choice, with commendable speeds and a great attitude towards user privacy. PIA is definitely the VPN I'd go for if I was a Linux user, largely because it's one of the only VPNs to offer a fully-featured Linux client (most providers, like Surfshark for example, only offer a command-line client for the operating system in question). The PIA client is compatible with Ubuntu, Mint, Arch, and Debian distros, and the company has told ProPrivacy that it's working on support for other distros as well. PIA affords customers a 30-day money-back guarantee on all their software, so you can try their Linux client for a month without incurring any real cost. Private Internet Access is a very secure VPN, and is one of the few to have their no logs claim tested in court not once, but twice. In both cases, PIA was dragged into a court case due to certain activity coming from IP addresses that belong to the provider. But, in both cases, PIA wasn't able to provide any information on the activity of the user in question because – you guessed it – it keeps no activity logs. No logs claims can be difficult to prove and some VPN companies either avoid discussing exactly what logs they keep or produce intentionally vague answers, so if you're looking for a provider that has tangible evidence to back up its claims, then PIA might be the provider for you. It also has a kill-switch, a 'PIA Mace' feature to protect against malware, and is highly customizable. If you're holidaying in Jamaica with a big group of friends or family, then PIA might be the VPN for you - you can use it on up to 10 devices simultaneously, which is a fair few more than the other providers on this list - ExpressVPN, as was mentioned in the section on the provider, only allows up to five. CyberGhost have been in the VPN game for many years now, and it got some of the slickest and most beginner-friendly apps around. It comes with an impressive server network too. CyberGhost Demo CyberGhost is a VPN service we've been reviewing and testing for years now, and it's hands down one of the most consistent, reliable providers we've been able to evaluate. The company is based in Romania too, which is great because it's out of the jurisdiction of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance. CyberGhost might not have any servers in Jamaica, but it's certainly a provider that won't let you down when it comes to unblocking content. It may keep some connection logs, but the company has confirmed on many occasions that no activity is ever recorded and no logs are ever kept. Like ExpressVPN, CyberGhost can get you a Caribbean IP address because it has 35 servers in the Bahamas. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg – CyberGhost has thousands of servers in a whopping 91 countries
worldwide. This means you'll have a much wider choice than with NordVPN. CyberGhost also has NoSpy servers in Romania, which come with extended bandwidth. This makes them ideal if you're doing data-intensive tasks or downloading large amounts of the stuff onto your computer. The provider also has servers optimized for streaming all over the world, and it even tells you which websites certain servers work best on. CyberGhost isn't the most feature-rich VPN out there, but it's got all the basics covered well. It, of course, equips all users with a kill-switch and use AES-256 bit encryption to secure servers. However, CyberGhost does not offer any obfuscation (VPNs like ExpressVPN and NordVPN have servers that hide the fact you're using a VPN) so look elsewhere if you're sure you need this feature in a provider. This means CyberGhost's apps are really easy to use and you don't have to spend time configuring too many settings before you get yourself up and running – ideal if you're on vacation in Jamaica and you don't want to have to spend ages sorting out your software. Attention indecisive shoppers, this is the VPN for you. CyberGhost gives all its users 45 days to decide if the software is for them or not, within which you can claim a full refund on any of the money you've coughed up. However, most people who buy a subscription end up sticking with one – so why not find out if you're one of them. HMA – formerly known as 'Hide My Ass' – is our top pick for everyone who needs a Jamaica IP address, thanks to its local servers and advanced security features. HMA Demo HMA is a Czech Republic-based provider with great speeds and security features. The provider uses AES-256 bit encryption, equips users with a kill-switch, and even offers a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can try out their software without incurring any actual costs. The provider doesn't have any obfuscated servers, however, so if you're accessing content that is censored or banned in your country, then you might want to look elsewhere for a provider that can hide your VPN connection. But aside from that, and if streaming is your main priority – both inside and outside Jamaica – then HMA is definitely worth a shot. HMA is one of the only mainstream providers serving Jamaica; it has 6 IP addresses in Montego Bay. This is great for unblocking Jamaican content if you're residing in another region, and the servers seem to work well. HMA also has a number of IP addresses in countries across the Caribbean, like the Bahamas, Haiti, Montserrat, and Saint Lucia. HMA is the kind of provider to service locations where most VPNs don't reach. Although it only has just over 1,000 servers worldwide, you can obtain IP addresses from over 210 countries
with HMA, vastly more than any other provider we review regularly. A nice touch on the HMA website is that it lets you toggle between real-life servers and virtual servers, a distinction most VPN companies see fit to obscure. HMA does pretty well on our speed tests – it's consistently in our top 10 quickest VPNs and we test all the main providers daily. This is great if you're trying to stream content from Jamaica or elsewhere, as you won't have to worry about buffering HMA may ring alarm bells for the more passionate VPN users amongst you, and understandably so – it handed over information to the FBI in 2011 when the company was dragged into a court case involving members of a hacking group that were using their servers. This was, however, ten years ago, and HMA has since established itself as a trustworthy no-logs service – as it says on its site, HMA has been through two acquisitions in that time and is a completely different company now. Nowadays, the provider can guarantee that your IP address, the DNS queries you make, how much data you've transferred, and what you were doing whilst you're connected isn't recorded. HMA is a good all-rounder these days when it comes to security and privacy, but being based in the UK, you can never be too sure. Although I would definitely still recommend it at the moment, particularly if you're looking for a Jamaican IP address, keep an eye out for UK legislation pertaining to the collection of data that might cause HMA some problems. 1. How to get a Jamaican IP address
All of the VPN's listed above are really solid choices if you'd like to unblock content from around the world whilst you're in Jamaica. However, a lot of the top VPNs – including four out of five on the list – don't actually have servers in the country itself, so if you want a Jamaican IP address, I'd advise you to check out HMA. I'll explain more about this later when we look at the providers in closer detail.
If you are on the market for a Jamaican IP address, it's worth noting that you might not need a Jamaican IP address to unblock whatever show it is that you'd like to watch. Some Caribbean TV channels are available all over the region, whereas others broadcast in a proportion of the countries located there. The long and the short of it is, if there's a channel you want to unblock in the region, a Jamaican IP might not be the only way to go about it.
I'll point out the providers with servers elsewhere in the Caribbean when we look at them in more detail, and include instructions that'll show you how to get a Jamaican IP address in just five simple steps.
Why do I need a VPN for Jamaica?
As I mentioned earlier, if you want to unblock geo-restricted content from around the world whilst in the Caribbean, then you're going to need a VPN. Websites enforce geo-restrictions and 'block' content because they don't have the right to show it everywhere in the world.
Websites can do this because your IP address – a unique set of numbers linked to your device that ensures you receive the correct data you request from the internet (a 'request' could be anything as simple as clicking on a webpage) – is visible to every single website you visit whenever you're online, and IP addresses contain information about your approximate geographic location.
So, if I'm the BBC and I only have rights to show certain shows in the UK, then I'll just block any IP addresses from outside of the United Kingdom. But with a VPN, the BBC – and any other streaming service that enforces geo-restrictions – won't see your true IP address. Instead, they'll see the IP address of one of your provider's servers. This is because VPNs funnel all your traffic through an encrypted tunnel and onto a private server before it reaches the internet, masking your IP address. Because of this handy feature, geo-restrictions are no match for a good VPN provider.
Unblock content from Jamaica in 5 steps
Below are some broad steps for unblocking content whilst you're in Jamaica. The process may vary slightly from device to device, but this is the general procedure you'll need to take to unblock your favorite shows.
- Sign up for one of the VPN services featured in this article.
- Download and run the software on your primary device.
- Head over to the streaming service you'd like to unblock.
- Sign up for an account using your email address.
- Start streaming the content you want to watch!
Get yourself a Jamaican IP address in 5 steps
Here's all the steps you need to get yourself one of those Jamaican IP addresses we mentioned earlier. Remember, only HMA has Jamaican servers, so you can't go for another provider.
- Sign up for a subscription to HMA.
- Download and install the software on your device.
- Log in to your HMA account.
- Connect to a server on their server list located in Jamaica.
- Surf the web with your Jamaican IP!
Are VPNs legal in Jamaica?
Yes! In Jamaica, accessing the internet with a VPN is completely legal and therefore you won't have to worry about using one whilst you're connected.
Jamaica actually ranks very highly for press freedom – Reporters Without Borders currently rank the nation 7th worldwide for freedom of the press – that's even higher than places like Switzerland and New Zealand. Although this doesn't necessarily say anything about surveillance, it certainly illustrates that the government's attitude to free thought and public debate is healthy.
All is not rosy, however. Jamaica's LGBT community still face major challenges legally, socially, and politically, and there's a lot of anti-LGBT violence and outdated, discriminatory legal statutes that unfortunately still carry weight. So, if you're in Jamaica and you're feeling unsafe or uncomfortable expressing yourself online, then a VPN might be one piece of tech that could alleviate that to some extent.
Can I use a free VPN in Jamaica?
Because Jamaica isn't ruled by an authoritarian dictator hell-bent on watching his citizen's every move, you might want to check out a free service. After all, why not save money whilst you unblock your favorite shows? There's relatively little to worry about in terms of censorship.
It would be wrong to say there aren't any good, free VPN services out there. But free services, broadly, are associated with issues that just don't affect paid services in the same way. Examples include:
- Glitchy or broken user interfaces
- Selling data to third parties and advertisers
- Shady or downright unacceptable privacy policies
- Poor or non-existent customer support lines
- The presence of adverts and malware
- The keeping of both connection and activity logs
All in all, it's better to just bite the bullet and pay a couple of dollars a month for a paid provider you know you can trust. Unlike free VPNs, it's actually worthwhile for them to focus on retaining their existing customers – who are paying their bills – and giving them the best possible experience. If a piece of software is free, you have to ask yourself how the creators make their money. In the VPN sphere, the answer is rarely pretty. Here's a bit more info about some of the dodgy free VPNs we've found floating around:
Testing and comparing VPN speeds
Due to the fact Jamaica, as well as the rest of the Caribbean, is not the most well-serviced area in the world with regard to VPN servers (and the fact a lot of the islands are dotted around in the ocean) you'll probably be sending your traffic on quite a long journey when you're connecting to different servers.
This means you need a VPN that has a negligible impact on your speeds. We test VPN speeds of all the top providers – including the ones featured in this article – on a regular basis so that you have the most up-to-date info available regarding their speeds.
